Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari | Uganda Wildlife

Experience Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to tree-climbing lions, the Kazinga Channel, and diverse wildlife safari experiences in Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular savannah park, known for its tree-climbing lions, diverse ecosystems, and the Kazinga Channel boat safari. Wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, leopards, hippos, and over 600 bird species.

Key Attractions and Activities
  • Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel: A must-do activity offering close-up views of large populations of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and numerous bird species along the banks of the 32-km channel connecting Lake Edward and Lake George.
  • Game Drives: Explore the Kasenyi Plains in the northeast for excellent opportunities to spot lions, leopards, buffalo, and herds of Uganda kob. The southern Ishasha sector is famous for its unique tree-climbing lions lounging in fig trees.
  • Chimpanzee Tracking: Trek through the lush, 100-meter-deep Kyambura Gorge (also known as the "Valley of Apes") or the nearby Kalinzu Forest to track habituated chimpanzees and other primates like red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
  • Nature Walks and Crater Tours: Take guided nature walks in the Maramagambo Forest to see primates, bats, and pythons, or visit the scenic volcanic explosion craters and the historic Lake Katwe salt works.
  • Bird Watching: The park is a paradise for ornithologists, with over 600 recorded bird species, making it one of the most diverse birding destinations in Africa.
Planning Your Visit
  • Getting There: The park is approximately a 6-hour drive from Uganda's capital, Kampala, via either the Mbarara or Fort Portal route. Domestic flights from Entebbe to the Mweya or Kasese airstrips are also available.
  • Accommodation: Options range from luxurious lodges like Mweya Safari Lodge and Ishasha Wilderness Camp to budget-friendly hostels and campsites.
  • Best Time to Visit: The drier months of January to February and June to September are ideal for game viewing, as animals congregate around water sources and trails are more solid for trekking.
