The Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana is one of the world's largest and most remote protected areas, renowned for its vast, untouched wilderness, desert-adapted wildlife, and stunning stargazing opportunities. Spanning over 52,800 square kilometers (more than 10% of Botswana's land area), the reserve is primarily a flat, semi-arid landscape of grasslands, bush, and fossilized river valleys.

• Wildlife Viewing: The reserve is home to a wide array of wildlife, including the legendary black-maned lion, cheetahs, leopards, brown and spotted hyenas, giraffes, wildebeest, and large herds of springbok and gemsbok. The best time for wildlife viewing is generally during the rainy or "green" season (November to May), when animals gather at the pans and fossilized river valleys like Deception Valley to feed on the sweet grasses.

• Access: The reserve can be accessed via four gates, with Matswere Gate in the northeast being the most popular entrance point. Maun is the nearest town with an airport, from which visitors can drive or take a private charter flight.
• Accommodation: Options range from basic public campsites (which require advance booking) where you must bring your own water and supplies, to a few upscale lodges located inside or just outside the reserve borders.
• Best Time: While the dry season (June-October) offers drier weather, the green season (November-May) is recommended for the highest concentration and variety of wildlife and lush landscapes.
