Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest National Park | Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda

Kibale Forest National Park is Uganda’s top destination for chimpanzee trekking and primate safaris. Discover guided forest experiences today.

Kibale Forest National Park is Africa’s primate capital, home to 13 primate species including chimpanzees. Chimpanzee trekking and forest walks are the park’s main highlights, along with exceptional birding opportunities.

Key Activities
  • Chimpanzee Trekking: This is the park's main attraction, offering guided walks to observe habituated chimpanzee families. Treks usually last 2 to 5 hours, with visitors spending one hour with the chimps once located. Walks are offered daily at 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM from the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre.
  • Chimpanzee Habituation Experience: For a more immersive experience, this all-day activity allows you to join researchers and spend several hours with a semi-habituated chimpanzee community.
  • Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary: Located just outside the park, this community-run project is a haven for birdwatchers (over 200 species) and offers excellent opportunities to spot various primates and learn about local community initiatives.
  • Bird Watching: With over 375 bird species, Kibale is a top destination for bird enthusiasts. Key species include the green-breasted pitta and the great blue turaco. Birding tours typically start at 7:00 AM at Kanyanchu.
  • Night Walks: Explore the forest after dusk to spot nocturnal animals like pottos, bush babies, and tree hyraxes, guided by a ranger with a powerful torch.
  • Cultural Experiences: Visit local Batoro and Bakiga communities to learn about their traditions, enjoy cultural dances, and tour local projects and the nearby Amabere Caves.
Planning Your Visit
  • Location: Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda, approximately 320 km west of Kampala and about 26 km southeast of the scenic Fort Portal town.
  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September when trails are less muddy.
  • Accommodation: Options range from basic campsites to luxury lodges, both inside and outside the park.
  • Getting There: The park is accessible by road via the Kampala-Fort Portal highway (about a 6-hour drive) or by chartered flight to the Kasese airstrip, followed by a 2-hour road transfer.
