Mbweha Camp is a charmingly rustic lodge in the private Congreve Conservancy, which lies alongside the southern boundary of Kenya’s Lake Nakuru National Park. Ten bush cottages are scattered throughout the grounds, with gravel pathways winding through the lawns under the canopy of euphorbias and fever trees. Its location outside the National Park offers the freedom of night drives in the conservancy, together with a range of activities that would otherwise not be possible, and this is a lovely base for exploring the park itself and the surrounding areas of interest.
The vast circular dining and bar area has a traditional African feel, with a soaring thatched ceiling, polished stone floors and open sides letting the breeze in. A central lounge has a fabulous sunken indoor fire pit which is lit every evening. Rolling lawns lead down to the swimming pool and a permanent waterhole nearby, where smaller species of wildlife are often spotted. For those who wish to keep in touch, there is WiFi connectivity in the main area.
Mbweha’s guest accommodation consists of ten very spacious bush cottages with traditional African thatched roofs, a circular layout and unusual walls constructed from chunky lava stone. Four double cottages, four twins and two family suites offer a choice of options to suit most requirements. Décor is fairly simple, with earthy colours, plush rugs, crisp linens and mosquito nets. Each is en-suite with a lovely outdoor bathtub, a small private patio, and a good level of comfort throughout.
All-day guided game drives with a lunch picnic in Lake Nakuru National Park offer good game viewing opportunities, with leopard, lion, buffalo, rhino and a variety of antelope species to be seen. Birdwatching is fantastic, with over 450 species recorded. The lake draws huge flocks of flamingos, sometimes more than a million, that turn the shoreline pink with their plumage – a photographer’s paradise. Activities outside the park include mountain biking, horse riding, night drives and bush walks.
